WVU halts Tulsa ticket sales; Herd sports on the Net

Marshall athletics now has an official Internet site that willcontain updated press releases and information about each of theuniversity's 16 sports. The site's address is www.HerdZone.com.

The site, designed by FANS-only.com, will be updated daily byMarshall's sports information department.

It will provide fans and alumni across the country with currentnews about Herd athletics.

HerdZone.com also links to the Mid-American Conference's home pageas well as quarterback Chad Pennington's web site, HerdQB.com.

WVU FOOTBALL: West Virginia University has halted ticket sales forits home football game against Tulsa on Sept. 26, WVU ticket managerDebby Travinski said.

A limited number of tickets remains for the home contest againstBoston College on Nov. 21. For more ticket information, call theMountaineer ticket office at 1-800-WVU-GAME.

LITTLE LEAGUE: Charleston Northeast defeated Barboursville 1-0Friday to capture the state Little League title.

Charleston advances to the Southern Regional tournament in St.Petersburg, Fla. The winner of that tourney advances to the LittleLeague World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

QUACKENBUSH HONORED: Kristin Quackenbush, a seven-time track andgymnastics All-American at West Virginia University, has beenselected to receive a $5,000 NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded to student-athletes who maintain a 3.0grade-point average and perform with distinction in varsitycompetition.

Quackenbush, WVU's first female pole vaulter, finished fourth atthe 1998 NCAA outdoor track and field championships to earn All-America status.

Previously, Quackenbush had won three floor, two vault and oneall-around gymnastics All-America awards.

Her seven All-America citations tie her with James Jett andPatience Itanyi for the most in school history.

U.C. SOCCER: The University of Charleston will host the 1998 KelmeClassic round robin tournament on Oct. 3.

The tournament includes three traditionally strong soccer programsin Truman State, Rockhurst and West Virginia Wesleyan. Prior to thetournament, the Golden Eagles will travel to Evansville, Ind., onSept. 11-12 to face Southern Indiana, last year's top regional seed,and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, a national quarterfinalist.

DUPONT SCRIMMAGE: Greenbrier East will play host to DuPont in afootball scrimmage at Spartan Stadium at 11 a.m. on Aug. 15.

The Greenbrier East Quarterback Club will sponsor a tailgate partywith hot dogs and soft drinks prior to the game.

HERD GOLFER QUALIFIES: Marshall University senior golfer BrianWilkins qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship, to be held inRochester, N.Y., from Aug. 24-30.

Wilkins, one of 6,627 golfers competing over 36 holes at 89different sites, advanced to the second stage along with 312 othergolfers by shooting a two-round total of 3-over-par 145 at theCountry Club of Rochester.

The field of 312 will be narrowed to 64 golfers, who will advanceto match play.

The 36-hole championship final is scheduled for Aug. 30.

SOFTBALL TOURNEY: The inaugural United States Slow-pitch SoftballAssociation Men's State Church Tournament will be played inParkersburg on Aug. 15-16.

CAPITAL CITY STRIDERS: The Capital City Striders' Jason Benekerfinished 10th in the high jump in the young men's 17-18 age divisionat the Amateur Athletic Union national track & field championships atNorfolk State University in Hampton Roads, Va., Thursday.

Beneker, who competed in track for Nitro High this past season,cleared 6 feet.

The Striders' Jasmine Cotten took 10th in the 100-meter dash inthe bantam girls 10 age group with a time of 14.4 seconds.

Derrick Johnson and Cotten will compete in today's finals.Johnson, who will run in the intermediate boys 15-16, will compete inthe 100 and Cotten will run in the 200.

MEMORIAL RACE: The Pude Lucas Memorial Race will be held at the I-77 Jackson County Speedway at Ripley Saturday night.

Time trials begin at 7 p.m. and racing starts at 8. A regularprogram of semi-lates, modifieds, street stocks, four cylinders anddwarf cars will be held. The late model feature race will be 30 lapsand the winner will receive $2,000.

Lucas died on Nov. 26, 1997, while deer hunting. He was a racecar owner from 1968 until his death.

HILL CLIMB: A motorcycle and all-terrain vehicle hill climb willbe held in Hamlin on Sunday.
