LIKE IT OR NOT, THE REGION IS PART OF GLOBAL ECONOMY ANALYSTS DETECT A PAROCHIALISM AND A RESISTANCE TO CHANGE.(BUSINESS)

The Capital Region, long accustomed to isolation from economic upheavals and global traumas, is being wakened to its connections with the world as a result of several recent dramatic layoff announcements, according to economic and social experts.

But that ignorance of the outside world hasn't been fully banished, nor is it unique to this region, they say.

``People must shut out a large part of reality to stay focused,'' said Ray Bromley, director of the Lewis Mumford Center for Urban and Regional Research at the University at Albany. ``And most of the world doesn't impinge on us until it affects us personally.''
