SCHENECTADY City officials are looking into an accident that caused $9,300 in damages to a brand-new $450,000 fire rig.
Joseph Notar, City Council Finance Committee chairman, said he was disturbed because it took Mayor Frank J. Duci 18 days to answer Notar's memo asking for details about the accident.
``This rig was only on the road for a short period when I learned it was involved in an accident,'' Notar said. He said he was awaiting a report from the city Auto Accident Committee.
Duci said he couldn't answer Notar's request until this week, when he received a report from Fire Chief Thomas A. Varno.
Duci said the city's insurance policy includes a $5,000 deductible. ``I guess that means we'll have to pick up the remaining $4,300 cost,'' he said.
Duci said firefighter Bert Wintle hit a ballard, a metal pole, while pulling the vehicle away from a fuel island at the city garage.
Assistant Fire Chief Robert W. Farstad said the vehicle, called a quint, is a combination ladder truck/pumper. He said the vehicle was damaged on the rear driver's side.
``It was a preventable accident,'' Farstad said. ``But I don't believe the driver should be punished any more than drivers of any other city vehicles that are involved in accidents.''
