SA: Industry bodies express concern over industrial dispute
Car industry groups are warning that Australia's reputation is at stake following theshutdown of local car production by an industrial dispute.
Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries chief executive PETER STURROCK says the disruptionat Adelaide exhaust producer Walker Australia is irresponsible, reckless and short-sighted.
About 400 workers at Walker have been on strike for the past 11 days in a dispute overa trust fund to protect their entitlements.
Mr STURROCK says the dispute could damage the view of Australia as a competitive locationfor investment and a reliable source of supply for vehicles and components.
Federation of Automotive Products Manufacturers chief executive PETER UPTON says localsuppliers may lose business permanently if car manufacturers are forced to source componentsoffshore.
Mitsubishi will be the only local vehicle manufacturer building cars today.
Holden, Ford and Toyota have all stopped production because of a lack of components.
The Walker dispute is headed for the Federal Court this morning, with management seekingdamages against the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union.
